Selected team members will travel to Augsburg, Germany for quality training on the final World Cup venue. Following that, they will continue on to Beijing to train on the Olympic course.

Flatwater Sprint 2008 Olympic Team Trials
Day 3
- OKLAHOMA CITY, OK April 20, 2008

In today’s flagship event on the final day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials the team of Brandon Woods, Bartosz Wolski, Taran Stucchio and Tim Hornsby won the competition in the Senior Men’s K4 1000. They now go on to the Pan American Championships in Montreal May 15-18 with a chance to win a berth for each at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Stucchio and Hornsby also won the Senior Men’s K2 500 on Friday, giving these two athletes two opportunities to get to the Beijing Games while competing in Montreal.
Summarizing the outcomes from the weekend in the Senior classification:

• Carrie Johnson will represent the U.S.A. in the Beijing Games in the K1W 500
• Johnson will pair with Maggie Hogan in the K2W 500 in Montreal with a chance to win the right to compete in a second event in Beijing
• Morgan House, with his win in Friday’s K1 500, puts himself in the position to earn the right to compete in that event in Beijing. He would need to place higher than Rami Zur in the World Cup this June in Szeged, Hungary for
this to occur.
• Despite coming in second to House in the K1 500, Rami Zur still has multiple opportunities to earn the right to compete in Beijing. Zur will be competing in Montreal in the K1 1000 as well as the K2 1000 with partner Jeff Smoke. Victories in either event would assure Zur a trip to Beijing.
• The team of Taran Stucchio and Tim Hornsby won the K2 500 and will secure positions on the Beijing team with a victory in Montreal.
• Stucchio and Hornsby were also members of the winning K4 1000 giving them a second opportunity to earn a trip to Beijing. With Bartoz Wolski and Brandon Woods, Stucchio and Hornsby will compete in Montreal with 4
Olympic berths on the line.
• Jordan Malloch’s dominating performances in both C1 events present him with a dual opportunity in Montreal to earn a position on the Beijing Olympic Team.
• Jorge Montero and Amniel Naranjo won both the C2 500 and 1000 and with a victory in Montreal could earn Olympic berths.

Highlights of the weekend’s Junior classification:
• A large number of clubs from across the continental U.S. and Hawaii brought many juniors and cadet paddlers to the Olympic Trials. The competitive nature of the junior racers bodes well for the future of the U.S. Sprint program.
• Junior standout Ryan Dolan, winner of the Junior K1 500 and K1 1000 as well as the K2 500 and K2 1000 (with partner BJ Campbell) had a breakout performance in his first national regatta.
• A total of 21 juniors were nominated for the Junior Pan American Team.

Flatwater Sprint 2008 Olympic Team Trials
Day 2
- OKLAHOMA CITY, OK April 19, 2008

Today was a picture perfect day for racing at the Chesapeake Boathouse on the Oklahoma river!  Clear skies and calm conditions made the day a great one for athletes and the huge gallery alike.

Day one’s first final saw Rami Zur recover from a disappointing day one of competition by winning the Senior Men’s K1 1000 meter.  Zur erased an almost three second deficit at the 500 meter mark to win over Jeff Smoke by almost a second.  This come from behind effort would be a sign of things to come for Zur.

In the last final competition of the day, and in a must win situation, Rami Zur paired up with Jeff Smoke to overcome a 2 second deficit at the 500 meter point to win the Senior Men’s K2 1000 meter by almost a full second.  This win nominates Zur and Smoke to represent the U.S.A. internationally in the upcoming Continental Qualifier and World Cups.

The boat crewed by Maggie Hogan, Katie Hagler, Emily Mickle and Kari-Jean McKenzie won the Women’s K4 500 final in the very first race of the day.  This win insured their official nomination for the upcoming Continental Qualifier where they will be racing for a U.S.A. Olympic berth.

Junior racing continued on a high level personified by Ryan Dolan and Chelsea Smith in their continued dominance of the field in which they won their respective Junior K1 1000’s.

Flatwater Sprint 2008 Olympic Team Trials
Day 1
- OKLAHOMA CITY, OK April 18, 2008

Clear skies and warming temperatures ruled day one of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Flatwater Sprint at the beautiful Chesapeake Boathouse on the Oklahoma River.  The large crowds watched great 500 meter distance racing punctuated by several surprises and upsets.

Carrie Johnson from San Diego, CA won 2 gold medals; 1 each in the Senior Women’s K1 and the Senior Women K2 (with partner Maggie Hogan) cementing her trip to represent the U.S.A. in Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Morgan House from Gainesville, GA won a gold medal in the Senior Men’s K1, upsetting heavily favored Rami Zur.  This forces Zur and House to face off in June in Szeged, Hungary to fill the U.S.A. men’s Olympic K1 berth on the Beijing Olympic Team.  House went on to win a Bronze medal (with partner Patrick Dolan) in the Senior Men’s K2.

Jordan Malloch from Seattle, WA dominated the field in the Senior Men’s C1 comfortably earning a gold medal.  Malloch now sets his sights on the Olympic Continental Qualifier in Montreal where he will attempt to qualify another berth in Beijing.

Another major upset was seen in the Senior Men’s K2 where Timothy Hornsby, also from Gainesville, GA and Taran Stucchio, from New York, powered to a surprise gold medal win over the favored pair of Brandon Woods and Bartosz Wolski.

Many world-class Junior athletes competed in the day’s events as well.  Extraordinary performances were given by these juniors (ages 15-18) from as far away as Hawaii and Rockaway, New York.
